I spent 10 years of my life teaching special education in the public schools. I swore I would never give an apple themed gift to any of my children's teachers. Ever.
Is it breaking that pledge to give any sort of themed gift?
If I just happened to have some fabric on hand that had a music theme and I thought it was pretty fabric and I needed a gift for Ellie's piano teacher, that would be okay, wouldn't it?
If I used two buttons from my stash to spruce it up and one had some embroidery to turn it into a musical note, that wouldn't be making matters worse, would it? And then if I did parallel rows of quilting to make it look like a musical staff, she might not even notice that...
If she did, I hope the gift card tucked inside the cup made up for it.

I've taught violin on and off for over 20 years. I've received gazillions of music tchotchkes, stationery, and honestly, most of it I give away or toss out, except for the stationery, which I use for writing practice notes to my students. But the difference with yours is that a) you made it and b) it's something she can use. I bet she'll love it. I know I would.
Super cute! So how did you end up finishing up the top and bottom? It looks like you zigzagged the edge? I am trying to make something like this for a friend but keep getting hung up on the finishing part. I'm wondering if a row of topstitching and use the pinking shears would work. Good job!
Thanks everyone, I feel better about it now. I really loved it, but know how I'd have felt if someone handed me an apple accessory - smile, say "thank you" and add it to the pile of stuff at home.
Kristi- I did zig zag the edge, but changed the settings to make the stitch longer and wider - more on the decorative side. I'll bet a straight seam and pinking shears would look great too.
I think that only counts when it's a generic piece of crap. This is lovely and unique.
